Here’s What It Means for Your Home or Business

You’ve seen the number everywhere. Internet providers market “100Mbps” like it’s the finish line of fast internet. But is it actually fast, or just a number that sounds impressive?

The honest answer: it depends on who’s using it, and for what.

Let’s break this down in plain terms, so you know exactly what speed your home or business in Nakuru actually needs.

Understand What 100Mbps Really Means

100Mbps stands for 100 megabits per second. That’s how much data your connection can pull from the internet every second.

In practical terms, 100Mbps can download a 1GB file in under 90 seconds under good conditions. A movie in HD loads almost instantly. A few tabs, a video call, and background app updates all run without a fight for bandwidth.

So yes, 100Mbps is fast. But “fast enough” is a different question, and it depends entirely on your household.

Here’s what shapes that answer:

How many people share the connection at the same time

How many devices stay connected, including phones, TVs, and smart gadgets

Whether you stream, game, or upload large files daily

Whether you use Wi-Fi or a wired connection

Two households on the same 100Mbps plan can have completely different experiences. One feels instant. The other feels sluggish by 7pm. The difference usually comes down to these four factors.

Test Your Speed Against Your Household Size

Here’s a simple rule you can use right now. Count the people in your home, and then multiply.

1 person – 25 to 50Mbps is usually enough

2 to 3 people – 50 to 100Mbps covers most needs

4+ people, or heavy streamers and gamers – 100Mbps or more, split across devices

A common industry guideline sets aside about 25Mbps per person in a household. If you live with three others, 100Mbps lands right where it should. Add more people, more smart devices, or more simultaneous 4K streams, and you’ll start to feel the pinch during peak hours.

This is where Smart Home setups, security cameras, and multiple streaming devices quietly eat into your bandwidth. None of them uses much on their own. Together, they add up fast.

Match Your Speed to What You Actually Do Online

Not every online activity pulls the same weight. Here’s how 100Mbps typically holds up:

Activity

Bandwidth Needed

Works Well on 100Mbps

Web browsing and email

1–5 Mbps

Yes, easily

HD video streaming

5–8 Mbps per stream

Yes, several at once

4K video streaming

15–25 Mbps per stream

Yes, up to 3–4 streams

Video calls (Zoom, Teams)

3–6 Mbps

Yes, multiple calls

Online gaming

3–10 Mbps

Yes, latency matters more

Large file uploads/downloads

20+ Mbps

Yes, though wait times grow with file size

Notice that most everyday tasks use a small fraction of 100Mbps. The strain shows up when several of these happen at the same time on the same connection, especially in a busy household or office.

If your work involves Online Business tasks like uploading large files or running cloud-based tools, upload speed matters just as much as download speed. This is where the type of connection you use becomes important.

Watch Out for These Speed Killers

A 100Mbps plan on paper doesn’t always mean 100Mbps in practice. A few things quietly slow you down:

Wi-Fi Signal Loss: Walls, distance from the router, and interference from other devices can cut your real speed by 20% or more.

Old Routers: Devices running outdated Wi-Fi standards struggle to deliver full speed, even on strong connections.

Too Many Devices at Once: Smart TVs, phones, laptops, and CCTV systems all draw from the same pool.

Asymmetrical Plans: Some connections offer fast downloads but slow uploads, which hurts video calls and cloud backups.

Connection type plays a role too. Wi-Fi 5 routers typically peak around 60 to 80Mbps on a 100Mbps plan, while Wi-Fi 6 handles multiple devices more efficiently and keeps speeds closer to what you’re paying for.

This is exactly why fiber and dedicated wireless connections, like the ones TCOM runs in Nakuru, tend to perform more consistently than shared cable networks. Fewer bottlenecks mean the number on your plan actually matches what you feel day to day.

Choose the Right Package for Your Household

Instead of guessing, match your plan to how your household actually uses the internet:
